History

West Coast Ship Chandlers and West Coast Industrial Supply was founded in San Francisco, California in 1953 by Dirk Van Meurs. It grew into a major marine and industrial supply company by following the basic principles of service, quality and fair pricing. As the requirements of the industry, and ship owners themselves, became more rigorous and stringent, West Coast adapted and adjusted to accommodate them.

The first ownership transition in 1991 brought West Coast into the modern area of chandlery. Comprehensive quotations, expanded market supply, multiple locations and back-office support were fundamental requisites of our customers, and we delivered.

After opening the Long Beach office in 1996, the company began to realize the potential of expansion and strategic partnerships. This was the period of transition from founder to second generation — a critical phase which has seen many others falter.

The current ownership group took control in July 2000, followed by the opening of the Portland branch in 2001, and the Seattle branch in late 2003.

With the advent of electronic commerce and prime vendor contracting, we are now prepared to meet the challenges of future supply requirements while redefining our role as an integral part of our customers’ success. Our partnership with One Source North America has put West Coast Ship Supply at the forefront of the industry, ensuring a healthy, progressive development for years to come.
